The area nominated for inscription

This area is at the very heart of the nomination. It is where the property’s Outstanding Universal Value lies. It includes the following important elements :

• elements which have shaped the cultural site and reflect its construction over time (boundaries marking out the hillside territories, the vineyard plot system, the major road networks, like « La Route des Grands Crus » - the Grand Crus discovery route).
• the geographical concentration of listed attributes, that is to say the tangible architectural heritage specifically linked to the creation and continuity of the Climats’ vineyard plot system.
• an architectural ensemble which reflects the Climats’ historical legacy at its most successful, that is to say between the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The area of the property was therefore determined in such a way as to include the most significant territories of the geosystem. These areas were selected (according to geomorphological criteria, the presence of Climats, urban sites, etc.) because they possess a strong historical identity and already benefit from a very comprehensive set of protection and management measures. The limits of the perimeter are based on the Climats territory’s physical elements and/or property concerns.        

The 40 municipalities in the area of the property

This ensures conservation of the landscape surrounding the area of the property.

The borders of the buffer zone, which have been defined according to management concerns, are:

• to the west, up in the Hautes-Côtes, following the uppermost curve and taking into account shared views of, or from, the core zone (landscape issues) ;
• to the south, along the natural boundaries, taking into account the landscape perspectives which can be seen from the foot of the Côte ;
• to the east, extending alongside the A 31 motorway, which formed the site extension boundary in the 20th century, thus enabling inclusion of the perspectives over, and from, the Saône valley plains ;
• to the north, along the Dijon motorway bypass, showing the scope of the conurbation.
